De första timmarna efter Barack Obamas storslam i tisdags vägrade paret Clinton att erkänna vad som hänt. Men under onsdagen gick det långsamt upp för dom att de som jag skrev igår de med största sannolikhet redan har förlorat valet.

Orsaken är de breda marginaler med vilka Obama vann i Virginia, Maryland och Washington D.C. där grupper som tidigare hade stött Clinton nu har gått över till Obama.

De beryktade superdelegaterna lutar nu allt mer mot Obama och det står redan klart att Obama mycket väl kan komma att vinna i Texas och kanske även i Ohio.

Clintonsidan pratar nu om att stick i stäv med det demorkatiska partiets regler försöka få delegaterna från de ogiltigförklarade primärvalen i Florida och Michican räknade. Det skulle leda till en strid utan lika och jag tror inte ens att de aldrig så hårdföra Clintons skulle våga göra det.

Orsaken är att Obama, dumt nog kanske, inte ställde upp där eftersom det demokratiska partiet hade ogiltigtförklarat valen som inte följde partiets regler.

Ett Clintonförsök att helt sonika kassera in de delegatrösterna för att slå Obama uppfattas redan som ett försk att stjäla ett val man inte kunde vinna på ett ärligt sätt.

Mrs. Clinton’s aides said she could still pull out a victory with victories in the biggest primaries still to come, including Ohio and Texas next month. But Mr. Obama’s clear lead in delegates allocated by the votes in nominating contests is one of a number of challenges facing her after a string of defeats in which Mr. Obama not only ran up big popular vote margins but also made inroads among the types of voters she had most been counting on, including women and lower-income people.

Should the cracks in her support among those groups show up in Ohio and Texas as well, it could undermine her hopes that those states will halt Mr. Obama’s momentum and allow her to claim dominance in many of the biggest primary battlegrounds.

With every delegate precious, Mrs. Clinton’s advisers also made it clear that they were prepared to take a number of potentially incendiary steps to build up Mrs. Clinton’s count. Top among these, her aides said, is pressing for Democrats to seat the disputed delegations from Florida and Michigan, who held their primaries in January in defiance of Democratic Party rules.

Mrs. Clinton won more votes than Mr. Obama in both states, though both candidates technically abided by pledges not to campaign actively there.

Mr. Obama’s aides reiterated their opposition to allowing Mrs. Clinton to claim a proportional share of the delegates from the voting in those states. The prospect of a fight over seating the Florida and Michigan delegations has already exposed deep divisions within the party.

But President Bush, newly confident that his troop-surge strategy is working, is taking steps that are likely to guarantee another Iraq-driven election. He favors keeping a big U.S. force in Iraq through the November elections, probably close to the pre-surge level of 130,000. That large troop presence will draw Democratic fire — and it will make the presidential contest all the more a test between a pro-war Republican nominee and an anti-war Democrat.

Bush in effect is redoubling his bet on success in Iraq. Unless the war becomes a lot more popular between now and November, that stance could hurt Republican congressional candidates and the national party. But Bush seems almost disdainful of politics these days. “History will be the judge of an administration,” he told Chris Wallace in a revealing Fox News interview broadcast last Sunday. “I frankly don’t give a damn about the polls.”

Bush kommer också, om han kan, att tvinga Obama att få blodade händer genom att gå med på att sex muslimska fångar på Guantanamo avrättas i illegala rättegångar på Kuba.

Något som han verkar tro kommer att ge McCain ett stort övertag i valet.

Det krisar i USA-valet och värre lär det bli. Paret Clinton kommer inte att ge upp och de verkar vara beredda att riva ner hela det demokratiska partiet hellre än att erkänna sig besegrade.
