Silicon Valley och dess IT-företag är idag vad Detroit och dess bilindustri brukade vara för USA “pÃ¥ den gamla goda tiden”, dvs dess ekonomiska dragmotor.

SÃ¥ hur gÃ¥r det för ekonomin i Silicon Valley? Pui-wing Tam skriver i Wall Street Journal om att IT-industrin i dalen visserligen Ã¥terhämtas men inom mycket smala ramar: In Silicon Valley, Recovery Remains Limited – WSJ.com

The report illustrates how much of Silicon Valley’s recovery since the recession has been limited to a narrow band of companies and sectors. Plenty of attention has been focused on fast-growing Web companies such as Facebook, Zynga and Twitter Inc., which have all grabbed soaring valuations.

In addition, public technology companies such as Google Inc. have recently announced they are ramping up their hiring. But while Silicon Valley’s employment growth last year was positive, largely driven by the tech industry, the region’s jobs only grew 1.1% in 2010, or by a net gain of 12,300 jobs. … There were some positive signs. Silicon Valley’s per-capita income levels stopped falling and stabilized at 2005 levels of roughly $62,400. Venture-capital investment rose in 2010, as did patent filings and the number of initial public offerings of Silicon Valley companies, all of which are typically seen as indicators of innovation activity.

Det här känns riktigt och påminner oss om att ett område som det gigantiska Silicon Valley faktiskt beror på mer än enbart IT. Man behöver skolor, vägar, service-jobb, sjukhus och inte minst kommunala jobb. Och där märker man alltså ännu inte av någon återhämtning, snarare tvärt om. För att få bukt på budgetunderskottet så tvingas Kaliforniens nye demokratiske guvernör Jerry Brown göra djupa budgetnedskärningar.

På rätt väg alltså men vägen kommer att bli mycket lång.
