Sjukvård i USA: SIRUM ger fattiga amerikaner tillgång till medicin

Att miljoner amerikaner inte har tillgång till medicin samtidigt som amerikanska läkemedelsföretag slänger oanvända medicinförpackningar värda miljontals dollar varje år, gav en grupp Stanford-studenter en ide. Dom grundade SIRUM, ett startupföretag som matchar sjuka amerikaner med medicin som närmar sig sitt bäst-före-datum. Och sen, som San Francico Chronicles Victoria Colliver skriver, så gäller det att snabbt få medicinen ut till de sjuka innan den måste slängas.

Connecting unused drugs, uninsured patients

Seven years ago, a group of Stanford students realized that a tremendous amount of medicine was being wasted and that it could help uninsured patients. Their idea has grown into a nonprofit that helps health care centers and drug companies donate unused prescriptions to pharmacies that then supply uninsured patients. In redistributing the medicines, the startup – Supporting Initiatives to Redistribute Unused Medicine, or Sirum – not only helps those needy and poor patients but reduces the environmental hazards of incinerating or otherwise destroying the unexpired drugs.

The goal of SIRUM is to redirect the estimated $100 million of still usable drugs that are destroyed each year in California to provide medicine for those in need. The SIRUM online platform aggregates and matches donors with clinics in real-time and facilitates the door-to-door shipment of donations. Since most medicines are donated because they are close to expiration (short-dated), eliminating unnecessary middlemen in the supply chain increases the likelihood that recipient clinics will receive and dispense donated medicine to patients who need it, instead of having the medicine expire in a warehouse or in transit.

Det här är ett paradexempel på hur startupföretag här i Silicon Valley inte bara uppfinner coola appar utan också faktiskt hjälper människor i nöd. Och tyvärr så finns det finns miljoner och miljoner människor i nöd i världens rikaste land.
