Sociala nätverk för IT-städer, allt tätare kontakter mellan Silicon Valley och IT-staden Seattle

Silicon Valley är som en jättelik masugn som ständigt kräver att matas med bränsle. I det här fallet handlar bränslet om högtränade IT-ingenjörer som kan jobba 80 timmar i veckan och idérika IT-entreprenörer med som fullkomligt spottar ur sig mobila och datormolnbaserade innovationer.

Nick Wingfield skriver i New York Times om hur IT-företagen i San Francisco och Silicon Valley nu har börjat rekrytera talang från University of Washington uppe i Seattle, eftersom Stanford-universtetet och Silicon Valley inte längre kan tillgodose den snabbt växande IT-industrin med folk: U. of Washington, a Northwest Pipeline to Silicon Valley – NYTimes.com

SOME budding entrepreneurs and computer whizzes based here in the Pacific Northwest are starting to turn heads down in Silicon Valley. They are professors and students at the University of Washington, home to what may be the best computer science department you’ve never heard of.

Although Stanford is considered the Hogwarts of techdom, U.W. has quietly established itself as the other West Coast nexus of the information economy. And while Seattle-area tech icons like Microsoft and Amazon have long relied on U.W. — pronounced “U-dub” by locals — as an incubator of talent and ideas, the Valley’s hottest companies have been getting the message, too. Their executives have begun streaming up the coast to Seattle, fueled by a talent arms race for programmers. Facebook, Zynga and Google have opened offices in the area, trying to woo U.W. engineers who’d rather live here, where taxes and home prices are lower, even if mist and dark skies envelop the scenery for much of the year.

Kontakerna mellan Seattle och Silicon Valley har alltid varit täta och eftersom det tar strax under två timmar att flyga hit, eller dit, så händer det rätt ofta att IT-entreprenörer nedflygande på morgonen för att sen flyga hem igen på kvällen. Och på somrarna flyger fyllda plan upp till Seattle med lokala studenter som sommarjobbar inom IT-industrin uppe i Seattle, och vice versa.

Ochh att IT-industrin här i Silicon Valley och San Francisco är intresserad av studenter och lärare på University of Washington är inte så konstigt eftersom universitetet ligger på Nobelprisnivå, med jag tror fyra levande nobelpristagare.
