President Obamas historiska misslyckade med att stifta fred i Mellanöstern kommer att få förödande effekter inte bara för Palestina utan kanske ännu mer för USA:s ställning i världen. Ingen stormakt kan bli förödmjukad av en pytteliten klientstat så här öppet utan att få betala ett mycket högt pris.

Det är knappast en ren tillfällighet att Kina nu successivt höjer tonen mot USA.

AP skriver om hur palestinierna utan resultat har försökt få Netanyahu att förhandla. Orsaken till det senaste palestinska initiativet är att man vill tvinga Netanyahu att klart definiera vilka gränser som ska gälla mellan Israel och Västbanken. Netanyahu fortsätter att vägra att ens befatta sig med den frågan. Obama har inte heller ägnat den frågan något större intresse. Det är något som de ockuperade palestinierna måste “förhandla fram” med ockupationsmakten, som alltså vägrar. The party’s social affairs minister, Isaac Herzog, has also been threatening to quit unless direct talks with the Palestinians are reopened by the end of this month.

Palestinierna fortsätter att bygga upp ett modernt fungerande samhälle i sina isolerade och krympande enklaver på Västbanken. Förr eller senare kommer palestinierna att vädja till FN om hjälp. Om då Obama lägger in sitt veto och bosättningarna fortsätter med Obamas tysta medgivande så är det svårt att se hur man kan undvika ännu ett storkrig i Mellanöstern.

Och allt detta väsen gäller alltså får att skapa ett litet avväpnat Bantustan på delar av Västbanken, med säkerhetsstyrkor och gränsövergångar som skulle vara kontrollerade av Israel. Gaza-remsan har aldrig ingått i Obamas planer. Om han inte ens kan få igenom ett så begränsad “självständighet” så finns det inte mycket hopp för fred i Mellanöstern.
