Regimens positioner utanför Damaskus försvagas, ett ökad antal flygplan skjuts ner och regimens Syrian Rebels Claim Near Control of a Key Province

The Syrian insurgency claimed on Thursday to have near-total control of a strategically important province in the country’s northeast, home to some of the few remaining domestic oil production facilities that supply fuel for President Bashar al-Assad’s military forces, after ferocious clashes that lasted for three days.

If confirmed, the rebel assertions about the province, Hasaka, would be at least the third significant gain by the insurgency this week, after the seizure of Syria’s largest hydropower dam and the takeover of a northern military air base with much of its fleet still intact.

The rebels claimed to have shot down three Syrian Air Force warplanes on Thursday, corroborating their assertions with videos posted on the Internet.

Mixing arms captured from their enemies with arms smuggled across borders, and adding in weapons that the rebels’ supporters have made in a constellation of hidden shops, Syria’s guerrilla brigades have managed to drive the conventionally equipped Syrian armed forces from areas of the northern countryside and, in certain areas, to put the government to siege.

This shadowy industry — resourceful and effective, but also dangerous — serves as more than a source of supply. It is also an indicator of both the rebels’ local organization and their near absence of outside logistical support.

The rebels’ success with makeshift bombs has been well documented, and has been instrumental in denying territory to government troops and to the loyalist militias. Recent examination of the equipment and interviews with smugglers and laborers who have helped the antigovernment units reveal an even larger, bustling grass-roots arms industry just outside the government’s grasp and gaze.

These varied efforts are locally regarded as an essential ingredient toward unseating the Assad government, and a means by which men not able or inclined to fight with rifles can contribute to the uprising.
