Det verkar allt troligare att USA verkligen kommer att falla huvudstupa ner i det fiskala stupet den 17:e oktober. Även om USA inte kommer att bli bankrutt just den 17:e därför att USA:s finansdepartement kommer att ha en mindre summa pengar i reserv, så kommer det att inom bara några dagar bli en smäll som kommer att höras över hela världen. Och som kommer att få historiska konsekvenser för USA, som administrerar dollarn, världens viktiga reservvaluta, en nation om världen nu inser man inte längre kan lita på.

Michael Schuman skriver i Time Magazine: Debt-Ceiling Standoff Threatens America’s Global Leadership. Even talk of a U.S. default is bad for the world economy and America’s standing within it.

Remember a couple of years ago the turmoil that resulted from fears that tiny Greece would default? Well, imagine the impact a default by the U.S. — an economy more than 66 times larger — would have. All of those Treasury bonds held around the world would quickly lose their value, wiping out a huge chunk of global wealth. The banks and funds that hold these bonds would take an instantaneous hit to their health, possibly destabilizing financial markets worldwide. The dollar would likely plummet in value as investors lose faith in U.S. assets. No wonder the world is getting nervous. An official in China, the world’s largest foreign holder of Treasuries (with almost $1.3 trillion of them) warned that “the clock is ticking” and pressed Washington to “ensure the safety of the Chinese investments.”

The cost to the U.S. would be greater than even this. A default would forever undermine global confidence in the ability and willingness of the U.S. to provide global economic leadership. That would hasten the decline of America’s status as the world’s “exceptional” nation. Policymakers and bankers around the world would be forced to look for other sources of economic stability.

Steven Erlanger skriver i New York Times om utlandets kritik mot USA:s fiskala ansvarslöshet:

“Both the Syria vote and the current budget crisis are nerve-racking for the world,” she said, referring to Mr. Obama’s sudden decision to ask Congress to authorize a strike on Syria and then changing his mind. Alain Frachon, a columnist and former Washington correspondent for the French newspaper Le Monde, said, “Washington is looking more like the Italian political system, with its permanent crises, and not a presidential system, as before.” “People are worried about the debt ceiling — it could be the little drop that could trigger another crisis in financial markets,” he said. “And it’s just when there was the perception for the first time in the long sovereign debt crisis that there is a window of opportunity to breathe a little bit, and to introduce a bit more suppleness into the way we’ve managed it.” The anxiety is all over Europe, Mr. Frachon said, and it comes just as Greece and Spain seem to be turning around, as there are spurts of growth that promise an end to recession, and as Germany has gotten through its elections and Rome through another political crisis. Another financial meltdown would hurt France, too, he said, not just Greece, Portugal and Spain. “People don’t want to see all this fragile equilibrium destabilized by a possible financial crisis provoked in Washington,” he said. >

Om inte Obama och republikanerna lyckas komma överens inom de närmaste dagarna så kan den 17:e oktober 2013 att bli början till slutet på USA:s speciella ställning i världen.

Världen har inte råd med en nation i nyckelställning som man inte kan lita på i finansiella och ekonomiska frågor. Det är en sak att tepåsarna under senator Ted Cruz will krossa USA och förvandla det till en hög ruiner, det är en helt annan sak om man också störtar världen i en ny global ekonomisk kris. Amerikanerna kanske inte bryr sig, men få i EU och Kina kommer att vara speciellt intresserade av att gå över stupet med USA.

Den enda frågan idag är om politikerna i USA verkligen kan rå på Ted Cruz och hans tepåserevolutionärer. Det är långt ifrån säkert.

Det är inte omöjligt att tepåsarna kommer att vägra att kompromissa kosta vad det kosta vill. Dvs ens om hela världsekonomin går in i en djup recession.

Det här är i sanning en regelrätt revolution, ett försök att krossa inte bara president Obamas sjukvårdsreform utan också hela det kvarvarande amerikanska sociala skyddsnätet. Hur långt som revolutionärerna är beredda att gå återstår att se.

Hög tid för världen inklusive Sverige att ställa krav på USA.
