Alla svenskar som överhuvudtaget finns, och även de som inte finns, känner till Las Vegas på delstaten Nevadas sydspets. Som är parad med Los Angeles.

Länge norrut ligger en mindre lyckad version av Las Vegas som heter Reno och som är parad med San Francisco. Samma affärsmodell men inte alls lika framgångsrik.
Det går billiga bussar dit från Silicon Valley med kinesiska invandrare och pensionärer på en dagsutflykt till kasinona med billig mat och rätt nedslitna shower.

Men nu, som Dionne Searcey skriver i New York Times, så försöker Reno förvandla sig själv till IT-stad: Reno Rolls the Dice on High-Tech

For most of America, Reno stirs images of worn-out casinos, strip clubs and quick divorces. But it is trying to change that reputation and reduce its reliance on gambling by taking advantage of its location and low taxes to gain a solid footing in the new economy. Instead of poker payouts, Reno now boasts of e-commerce ventures, an Apple data center and a testing ground for drones. It also hopes to attract a large factory to build batteries for Tesla’s electric vehicles.

“People believe in this town, and they’re tired of being presented as this joke,” said Abbi Whitaker, a local business owner who helped create a marketing campaign to reshape Reno’s image. “When you’re at rock bottom there’s a good chance to reinvent how you go up.”

Det är inte alls omöjligt. Man har nära till San Francisco och Silicon Valley, man har igen inkomstskatt och som man säger i Rena, när man befinner sig på botten så har man ingenstans att gå annat än uppåt.

En annan amerikansk stad som man inte förknippar med IT är Atlanta. Och även där försöker man nu förvandla sig till IT-stad:

I’m in Silicon Valley about once a month and I’m constantly asked, “How’s the startup scene in Atlanta?”

My answer is that it’s active, successful and growing. I explain that it is anchored by Georgia Tech with 20,000 students and 11 engineering programs ranked top 10 in their field. There’s a total of 270,000 college students in Atlanta.

There have been more than 100 acquisitions and IPOs of tech companies in Atlanta totaling over $80 billion in value.

There are clusters like information security highlighted most recently by VMware’s $1.4 billion acquisition of AirWatch and historically by ISS helping define the industry culminating in an IPO then $1.3 billion acquisition by IBM.

Nu är det bara att vänta tills Norrtälje blir IT-stad.
