Rodins The Thinker på Cantor Arts Center på Stanforduniversitetet

Ett par tre gånger per år så brukar min fru och jag ta bilen in till Stanforduniversitet för att titta runt på det utmärkta Cantor Arts Center på Stanforduniversitetet. Som trots att det ligger på ett privatuniversitet faktiskt har fritt inträde.

Man brukar kanske inte förknippa Silicon Valley och San Francisco med konst, men det är fel. Både San Franciscos Moderna Museum och Stanford expanderar just nu sina konstsamlingar på ett magnifikt sätt. Och Stanford satsar inte bara på konst utan också på musik och scenkonsten med den magnifika Bing Concert Hall med plats för över 800 åskådare

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The birthplace of Yahoo and Google, Stanford University is now ramping up and showing off its cultural resources.

Construction of a $235 million arts district near Palm Drive, the grand tree-lined campus entrance, is well underway here. Last year, the $112 million Bing Concert Hall opened. This year came the $36 million Anderson Collection, a new American-art museum designed to showcase paintings by Pollock, Rothko and Diebenkorn. Next up is the $87 million McMurtry Building for the art and art history department, to open in 2015. The first two buildings were designed by Ennead Architects; the McMurtry is by Diller Scofidio & Renfro.

Och mer lär det alltså bli. När IT-miljarderna rullar in så brukar IT-entreprenörerna vilja visa att det faktiskt också är kulturella. Till gagn för lokalinnevånarna.
