Trots den israeliska premiärministern Binjamin Netanyahus massiva och högljudda kritik av president Obamas avtal med Iran, som oreserverat och enhälligt har stötts av det amerikanska republikanska partiet och den kristna högern och som har letts av den inflytelserika Israeliska lobbyorganisationen AIPAC, så har hela 42 av 46 demokratiska senatorer nu slutit upp bakom sin president. Four Democratic senators announced on Tuesday that they would back President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, apparently securing enough votes so that Mr. Obama will not be forced to veto a Republican resolution disapproving of the accord.
The White House, which had worked aggressively with Congressional Democrats to build support for the agreement, had been hoping to avoid the diplomatic embarrassment of Mr. Obama being forced to use his veto to defeat a disapproval resolution.
And as critics in Congress prepared to begin a historic debate on the Iran agreement, the support of the four senators — Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Maria Cantwell of Washington, Gary Peters of Michigan and Ron Wyden of Oregon — meant that the Republicans would not have the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster of the resolution. Forty-two Democrats now back the agreement.

In early August, nearly 70 former senior members of Israel’s defense community, myself included, published an open letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to accept the nuclear deal as an “accomplished fact.” We also called on the Israeli government to renew trust and improve “political and security cooperation” with the United States.
Those appeals — one from a committee controlled by members of Mr. Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, the other representing Israel’s security establishment — share the same premise: In order to act effectively on our skepticism of Iran’s intentions and trustworthiness, Israel must enhance that historic alliance with America. Let the signing of the pact unite us, rather than divide us, as allies who know Iran may cheat and who, together, must be ready to stop it when that happens.
What I and my fellow signatories oppose is Mr. Netanyahu’s spiteful public battle with America’s president — precisely because it risks limiting cooperation in monitoring Iran. Mr. Netanyahu needs to recognize that the nuclear accord is a done deal.
He must stop fighting with the Obama administration and remove himself from the debate in Congress over the accord. Otherwise, he is jeopardizing an alliance that has been the cornerstone of Israel’s security for decades, and is undermining Israel’s defense. Killing the deal would kill American leadership in the Middle
East, and that would damage Israel’s security.
Men det finns inga tecken på att Netanyahu kommer att ändra sin konfrontationspolitik mot Obama, en man han uppenbarligen avskyr.
Den stora hjälten i det här dramat är den andra, pyttelilla israeliska lobbygruppen JStreet som har stött presidenten och kämpat emot AIPAC och som har visat att man inte behöver stödja Netanyahu-regeringen bara för att man råkar ha judiskt påbrå.
Men med avtalet nu säkrat så kommer de tektoniska blocken i Mellanöstern nu att långsamt förflytta sig. Och ge Iran och dess unga välutbildade medelklass en chans till ett bättre liv. Och med litet tur kan vi komma att få se den Gröna Rörelsen ta fart igen.
Det här är i sanning en historisk seger för Obama efter minst två tidigare nederlag mot Netanyahu i hans försök att få till stånd ett fredsavtal mellan Palestinierna och Israel.
Så kan det gå.
