Datormolnen gör det möjligt för vem som helt med ett kreditkort att hyra datorer på en timme, månad eller ännu längre. Ja det är egentligen inte en fysisk dator man hyr utan en s.k. virtuell avbildning som uppför sig som en fysisk dator.
Och det här är en en mycket stor grej för det betyder att man inte längre behöver ha en massa hårdvara i källaren.
Men som Quentin Hardy skriver i New York Times så håller datormolnen nu på att gå in i en ny fas där man inte längre hyr virtuella datorer utan
mikrotjänster som körs på datorerna i segment på 100 millisekunder.
Och ledaren här är Amazons Lambda.

The per-millionth pricing began last November, in the A.W.S. product Lambda. Lambda runs a customer’s line of code in response to a request, like looking up a ZIP code when given an address. Customers never rent servers, but pay for the moments of computing.
Microsoft last month announced that it would have its own “serverless” product. Google has something similar in early release, which is likely to be a product by the third quarter of this year.
Microsoft is even trying to do A.W.S. one better by microslicing the cost to rent some of its software licenses into the minutes of actual use. “We’re renting the sand and charging for the sun’s UV rays that hit you,” said Scott Guthrie, who runs Microsoft’s cloud.
For the big clouds, microslicing is also a way of coping with a tough task: Customers have to feel like they can rent all the computing they want, and the providers must always run at near full capacity. If someone is using cycles, and not whole machines, more people can be packed in.
Microsoft har sin egen konkurrent till AS Lambda som heter Azure Functions och Google har Google Cloud Functions.
Vad som fick mig att fastna för den här artikeln är att jag själj just har börjar arbete med IBM Bluemix OpenWhisk, som är IBMs öppen kod-konkurrent till Lambda.
En mycket spännande utveckling inom datormolnen som kommer att göra det enklare och billigare att skriva appar.
