När det uppenbarade sig att Google hade ett hemligt samarbetade med Pentagon, Project Maven, för att identifiera potentiella måltavlor för dödliga drönarattacker så blev resultatet en sällan tidigare sedd storm bland de anställda.

Företagets VD Sundar Pichai försöker nu övertyga de anställda och världen i övrigt att trots att företaget kommer att fortsätta sitt samarbete med Pentagon, så kommer man inte att arbeta på dödliga AI-baserade vapen.

Project Maven is a broad effort at the Department of Defense to inject more artificial intelligence into operations. The first project involved using AI to track objects such as buildings, vehicles, and people in drone video. Google’s precise role in the project is not clear, but the company has maintained that it was limited to “non-offensive purposes.”

Google’s new guidelines build on that line, saying it won’t apply AI to weapons or “other technologies whose principal purpose or implementation is to cause or directly facilitate injury to people.” The document also states that Google won’t work on surveillance technology “violating internationally accepted norms of human rights.”

Trots det positiva uttalandet så är det här lättare sagt än gjort. Och som vi såg när det framkom att USA torterade fångar under Irakkriget så vågade den amerikanska pressen inte ens använda order “tortyr”.

AI är här för att stanna och det kommer säkert att användas i de flesta konflikthärdar. Även av svenska trupper, och speciellt om Trump som nu verkar allt troligare, kommer att sitta sina två mandatperioder ut.
